Khao Lak is a relaxed beach community on Thailand’s Andaman Coast, known for its natural beauty, welcoming atmosphere, and slower pace of life. While tourism is part of the local economy, many neighborhoods remain distinctly Thai, providing opportunities to build genuine relationships with local people. It’s an ideal place for those who enjoy the outdoors, value community, and want to live intentionally.
Southern Thailand remains one of the least-reached regions of the country, with very few churches and many communities that have little opportunity to hear the Gospel. Serving here means investing where long-term relationships can make a lasting difference.
Khao Lak is generally considered a safe place to live. Like anywhere, it’s wise to use common sense and take normal precautions, but many families, retirees, and international visitors enjoy living here year-round.
Thailand has a tropical climate with warm temperatures throughout the year. The dry season typically runs from November through April, while the rainy season lasts from May through October. Even during the rainy season, life and ministry continue.
Life here is often simpler and slower than many people expect. A typical week may include time spent serving alongside local ministries, sharing meals with friends, mentoring younger believers, enjoying coffee with neighbors, shopping at local markets, and taking walks along the beach. Ministry is often woven naturally into everyday life.
Yes! Khao Lak has a growing surf community during the southwest monsoon season (roughly May through October). While the waves aren’t large, they’re enjoyable for beginners and longboarders, and surfing has become another way to build relationships within the local community.
The area offers beautiful beaches, waterfalls, hiking, local markets, cafés, snorkeling, diving, and nearby national parks such as Khao Sok. Whether you enjoy quiet mornings by the sea or exploring nature, there’s plenty to enjoy during your days off.
Housing varies depending on your length of stay and role. Some people stay at The Point, while others rent nearby apartments or houses. We’ll help you explore the options that best fit your needs and budget.
Living costs are generally lower than in many Western countries, although expenses vary depending on your lifestyle and accommodation. We’ll gladly provide current estimates as you begin exploring a longer-term stay.
You’ll find everything from authentic Thai food to international restaurants, cafés, bakeries, and grocery stores. Fresh fruit, vegetables, seafood, and local markets are readily available.
Yes. Khao Lak has local clinics and several nearby hospitals, with larger medical facilities available in Phuket if specialized care is needed. Many expats live comfortably here with routine medical care available nearby.
Yes. High-speed fiber internet is widely available, and Thailand has excellent mobile coverage. Staying connected with family, friends, or remote work is generally very easy.
Comfortable lightweight clothing, attire for ministry, good walking shoes, any personal medications, and an open heart ready to learn. Once you’re here, most everyday items can be purchased locally.
Most visitors fly into Phuket International Airport, which is about 90 minutes from Khao Lak. We can help arrange transportation from the airport when you arrive.
No. Many people begin serving with little or no Thai language experience. However, learning even a few phrases goes a long way toward building relationships, and we encourage everyone to continue learning over time.
English is spoken in many tourist businesses and by some local people, but not everyone speaks English fluently. Daily life becomes much richer as you learn some Thai.
Some people come for a few weeks, while others stay for several months or even longer. We’ll help you determine what length of stay best fits your goals and discuss practical considerations such as visas.
Visa options depend on your nationality, age, and intended length of stay. We’ll gladly talk through the current options and help point you toward the most appropriate path.
Our ministries focus on building long-term relationships through community. Opportunities may include mentoring, hospitality, children’s activities, English conversation, worship gatherings, prayer, discipleship, community events, outreach teams, and supporting local churches. We also have opportunities in language development and Oral Mother Tongue (OMT) Bible translation.
Every week is different, but most include a healthy rhythm of community life, prayer, serving alongside local ministries, building relationships, and personal rest. Rather than running large programs every day, much of our ministry happens through consistent presence and intentional relationships.
Absolutely. In fact, this is one of our greatest needs. Many of the most meaningful opportunities simply require people who are willing to invest their time, life experience, hospitality, and encouragement into others. Ministry here often grows through faithful presence rather than busy schedules.
Yes. Families are welcome, and every family’s situation is unique. We’d love to talk with you about schooling, housing, ministry opportunities, and how your family could become part of the community.
Not at all. A teachable spirit, willingness to serve, and love for people are far more important than previous experience. We’ll help you discover meaningful ways to use your gifts.
Not always. Some long-term YWAM roles do require a Discipleship Training School (DTS), while other volunteer opportunities may not. We’d be happy to discuss your background and explore what opportunities are available.
Khao Lak currently has 1 local Thai church and 1 Burmese church, as well as opportunities to connect with an international Christian community. We believe serving alongside and strengthening local churches is an important part of our ministry.
Christians are a small minority in Southern Thailand, which makes community especially meaningful. We value gathering for worship, prayer, meals, encouragement, and serving together.
Absolutely. Lasting impact here usually begins with everyday conversations, shared meals, serving together, and faithfully showing up over time. We believe some of the most significant ministry happens through ordinary relationships.
